Cash Car Buying Checklist
What to verify before handing over cash for a used car in Fresno.

Title & Ownership
- Verify the title is in the seller's name — not someone else's
- Check for 'Salvage', 'Rebuilt', or 'Lemon Law Buyback' brands on the title
- Make sure the VIN on the title matches the VIN on the dashboard and door jamb
- Confirm there are no liens on the vehicle (call the DMV or use a VIN check)
- Never buy a car with a bill of sale only — insist on a clean title
VIN Check
- Run the VIN through the free NHTSA database (vin.nhtsa.dot.gov)
- Check for open safety recalls
- Use a paid service (Carfax or AutoCheck) to see accident history
- Verify the VIN plate on the dashboard is not tampered with or replaced
Physical Inspection
- Inspect the vehicle in daylight, not at night
- Check for rust under the car, around wheel wells, and under floor mats
- Look for uneven panel gaps or mismatched paint — signs of prior collision repair
- Test all windows, locks, and mirrors
- Check that the AC blows cold (critical in Fresno summers)
- Test the heater
- Check all lights: headlights, taillights, brake lights, turn signals
- Inspect tires for even wear and remaining tread
Under the Hood
- Check engine oil — dark/sludgy oil is a red flag
- Check coolant level and color — brown or rusty coolant is a warning sign
- Look for oil leaks on the engine block or ground under the car
- Check the battery terminals for corrosion
- Look for cracked belts or hoses
Test Drive
- Drive at highway speed if possible
- Test the brakes — they should feel firm, not spongy
- Listen for grinding, squealing, or clunking sounds
- Check that the car drives straight without pulling to one side
- Test acceleration and gear shifts
- Check that the check engine light is not on
Payment & Safety
- Never send a deposit via Zelle, Venmo, or wire transfer without meeting in person
- Meet in a public place for the first viewing
- Bring a trusted friend or mechanic if possible
- Get a pre-purchase inspection from a mechanic ($75–$150 is worth it)
- Pay in cash or cashier's check — avoid personal checks
- Get a signed bill of sale with the agreed price, VIN, date, and both names
